When working on construction sites or factories, workers are bound to face safety hazards that are impractical to avoid. In order to minimize the risk of injuries and damages caused by workplace hazards, the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Act requires workers to be provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) at work.
The common form of hand protection
Cotton work glove is a type of hand protection commonly used by workers for protection at work. Unlike other forms of work gloves, cotton gloves are inexpensive and naturally biodegradable. Hence, the use of cotton gloves is much more cost effective as compared to other fibre gloves. In order to ensure that gloves provided to workers meet the required standards with accordance to WSH regulations, all gloves should be inspected and assessed before use.
Inspectors can be assigned to conduct a test to determine the presence of pinholes using pinhole detection and screening machine. By doing so it ensures that there is no pinholes which may lead to contamination and through the injection of compressed dried air into the glove.
Workers should limit their contact only to those materials involved in the work process and avoid coming into contact or handling other materials that are not part of the procedure such as their own personal belongings, and also face or clothing. This is to prevent any possible form of contamination when handling hazardous substances.
Handling and care
Cotton gloves can be easily washed and dried due to its tenacity and thermal properties. With its high tenacity, a large number of cotton gloves can be loaded at once, making the washing process much more convenient. In addition, cotton fiber can be dried using machine dryers. One thing to note when handling the wash is to ensure that water temperature should not be too high to prevent shrinking of gloves. The recommended heat setting is at approximately 40-degree Celsius to prolong the life of the cotton glove.
